Meet Lorena - Exam Rater & Former Certification Program Leader
Lorena Sevilla Somoza is a Certified Spanish Court Interpreter with over 25 years of experience in court interpreting and interpreter education. She began her career with the Loudoun County Courts and later joined the Supreme Court of Virginia’s Foreign Language Services Division as a Spanish Staff Interpreter in 2008. There, she took the lead on the Interpreter Certification Program, where she updated and taught the Court Interpreter Orientation Workshop and administered certification exams.

In 2011, Lorena became the Court Interpreter Program Specialist for the Maryland Judiciary, where she oversaw the recruitment, training, and testing of interpreter candidates. She also developed and led continuing education workshops and was responsible for administering the Interpreter Oral Examination, a role that sharpened her expertise in evaluating interpreter performance.

Now retired from state service, Lorena continues to contribute to the profession as a freelance interpreter and as the exam rater for our program. Students enrolled in the course will benefit from her extensive experience and discerning evaluation, gaining valuable feedback from someone who has shaped certification standards at the state level.
